In this special re-air episode of Shift & Thrive, Natalie Nathanson sits down with Monique McDonough, CEO of WorkTango, to explore the unexpected lessons of stepping into the top seat, the emotional realities of leadership, and what it really takes to guide organizations through change. With more than two decades of experience across consulting, technology, and employee engagement, Monique shares candid reflections on how the weight of leadership evolves, why curiosity is a CEO’s most underrated skill, and how leaders can stay grounded while navigating AI disruption, M&A transitions, and shifting workforce expectations.

Takeaways:

Leadership carries weight beyond meetings and tasks. CEOs shoulder responsibility even when they’re not actively working, making balance and pressure management essential.

Curiosity is a leadership superpower. Asking better questions builds confidence in unfamiliar areas and leads to stronger decision-making.

The CEO role changes how words land. Even familiar leaders must become more deliberate as people assign greater meaning to every message.

Effective change management is emotional, not just logical. People need empathy, context, and a clear vision of what success looks like.

Feedback only works when it’s closed-loop. Listening, acting, and communicating progress builds trust and sustained engagement.

Staying close to customers fuels smarter strategy. Direct conversations uncover insights that no filtered report can replace.

AI works best as a thought partner. Used intentionally, it accelerates preparation, insight, and higher-order thinking without replacing human judgment.

Links:

LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/moniquemmcdonough/

Website: https://www.worktango.com/

Ways to Tune In:

Spotify:

Apple Podcasts:

Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/fa60b654-1955-4055-93df-fdd40c2a5c8f/shift-thrive-ceo-insights-on-driving-change

iHeart Radio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-shift-thrive-ceo-insights-166792501

Pandora: https://www.pandora.com/podcast/shift-and-thrive-ceo-insights-on-driving-change/PC:1001086797

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClf9QxGUxZw_Sv8_4bZP34Q

This show is sponsored by Magnetude Consulting, bringing you the thinking-Power of a Growth Consultancy and the Getting-It-Done Power of a full-service B2B Marketing Agency.

Learn more at: Magnetude Consulting

Transforming the Automotive Industry From the Inside - Floris Chaumat - Shift & Thrive - Episode # 118

Watch now (30 mins) | October 14, 2026 / 29:34 / E118

Shift & Thrive Podcast

How do leaders drive real transformation when “the way it has always been done” feels impossible to change, and why does behavior so often lag behind technology? In this episode of Shift & Thrive, host Natalie Nathanson talks with Floris Chaumat, Founder and CEO of Tradora, an AI-powered platform built to improve the vehicle ownership experience for consumers and dealerships. After becoming general manager of a $100 million dealership at 27, Floris shares why leaders must understand how a system behaves before trying to fix it, how a dealer-first distribution model lowers customer acquisition costs, and why alignment matters more than anything else when hiring. He also discusses the shift from hands-on operator to delegating founder, why AI should connect silos instead of automating each one separately, and the advice that still shapes how he leads.

Takeaways:

Learn the system you want to disrupt thoroughly before you try to fix it.

Hire for alignment with your vision, and be comfortable not being the smartest person in the room.

Give leaders the context and the why behind decisions, because without clarity there is no accountability.

Expect behavior change to be harder than technology adoption, and let a live demo prove what is possible.

Enter through a trusted existing channel to cut customer acquisition costs while you build toward the end state.

Use AI to connect your silos rather than automating each one on its own.

Do not confuse motion with progress, and listen to your employees and customers so you know when to pivot.

Quote of the Show:

“What could be right today could be wrong tomorrow, and the only way to find that out is hear your customers, hear your employees. The way you treat your employees is the way you treat your customers, so if you’re not willing to take feedback from your employees, you’re not taking feedback from your customers.” surfaces repeatedly: go-to-market decisions made too early are difficult to undo, creating cost and complexity without producing scalable growth.

This usually shows up after initial traction, often between rounds, when pressure increases to demonstrate momentum and invest in growth. Marketing becomes the obvious lever. Hiring becomes the most visible signal to boards and investors that the company is moving forward.

What’s often assumed at this stage is that the company has enough clarity to scale: who the core buyer is, which segment matters most, and what go-to-market motion will reliably produce results. In reality, most teams have not learned where true growth comes from.

As a result, committing to full-time marketing headcount too early often increases risk rather than delivering scalable growth. Not because marketing isn’t needed, but because it forces teams to operationalize assumptions about targeting, positioning, and channels before those choices have been validated.

The gap between pressure to scale and incomplete GTM clarity is where fractional marketing has become a more deliberate choice. Not as a temporary fix, but as a way to move forward while preserving flexibility before market focus and go-to-market model are fully understood.

Quick sidebar: What “Fractional” Really Means

Not all fractional marketing reduces risk. Often, “fractional” simply means a single senior marketer working part-time. Fewer hours alone do not de-risk go-to-market decisions.

A more effective fractional model is team-based, grounded in proven frameworks, informed by experience across multiple companies, and built by people who have learned how to influence leadership without being in-house. It reflects the discipline that comes from doing fractional work intentionally and over time. That distinction is what determines whether fractional support actually reduces execution risk.

Below are five reasons fractional marketing tends to de-risk early go-to-market execution.

1. It converts fixed burn into variable burn

Full-time marketing hires immediately increase fixed burn and reduce runway. If direction shifts, that cost remains, along with severance, disruption, and organizational drag. Fractional support keeps spend variable and adjustable, allowing burn to scale with learning, rather than ahead of it.

2. It reduces the risk of the wrong first hire

The first marketing hire carries outsized weight. When the fit is wrong, the impact compounds quickly. That mismatch is often about alignment, not talent: the wrong skill set (e.g., digital-heavy execution when the business needs partner-led growth), limited experience operating at that stage, or the reality of asking one person to operate as an entire marketing team.

Fractional teams reduce this risk by bringing complementary senior perspectives across core areas like positioning, demand, PR, sales enablement, and performance, without putting early GTM decisions on a single individual.

Don't bet your runway on a single hire. Get an entire team of senior specialists who can execute today and pivot tomorrow.

See How Fractional Marketing Works

3. It shortens the path to real signal

Fractional teams are focused on pressure-testing assumptions and generating insight while driving real-world impact, building only the minimum viable infrastructure required rather than overengineering from the start. That accelerates learning without slowing execution.

4. It delivers the right amount of capability at the right time

Early-growth companies don’t need a full in-house marketing department. They need a small set of senior capabilities applied thoughtfully. That includes senior strategic generalists and senior functional specialists who can move from strategy to execution quickly and pragmatically. Fractional models make that possible without overinvesting or building permanent structure too early.

5. It preserves strategic optionality

Perhaps most importantly, fractional marketing preserves strategic optionality. When companies learn what works before committing to structure, the eventual full-time hire inherits a validated set of programs, channels, and go-to-market motions that can be continued, refined, and scaled, rather than starting from scratch or unwinding prior assumptions.

Engaging a fractional marketing team at the right stage is about reducing execution risk while preserving flexibility across the portfolio. Done well, it provides early-growth companies with senior, execution-ready capability across strategy and function, supported by proven frameworks and pattern recognition built across multiple companies. That allows teams to move quickly without locking in structure too early.

The result is more than cost efficiency. Companies build validated programs, clearer economics, and a repeatable go-to-market motion that endures. These delivered assets are what make fractional marketing a durable advantage.

If you are assessing how to build learning systems for GTM initiatives to stay flexible, decipher market signals, and keep costs in line, let’s connect.

Ready to scale your go-to-market motion without the bloat of a full-time department? In this episode of Shift & Thrive, host Natalie Nathanson talks with Don Berchoff, Founder and CEO of TruWeather Solutions, a pioneer in hyperlocal weather intelligence for drones and air taxis. Don spent 24 years in the US Air Force and led science and technology initiatives at the National Weather Service before building his own company. He explains why he would rather lead technology adoption than have it done to him, how he hires for aptitude over resume, and why trusted data matters more than shiny AI. He also shares how he built a go-to-market case around a 4-to-1 return on investment for a product many buyers see as a nice-to-have.

Takeaways:

Lead technology adoption rather than absorb it, so you shape the change instead of reacting to it.

Hire for aptitude, passion, and the ability to learn over a perfect resume, then train people into the role.

Lead each person differently by learning their strengths, risk tolerance, and interests.

Check where data came from, how uncertain it is, and whether it has been altered before you build a plan on it.

Tie your offer to a measurable return, such as a 4-to-1 ROI, so buyers see it as essential.

Use AI to turn your expertise into executable content faster, and always review the output yourself.

Keep going when you disrupt the status quo, as long as your conviction is backed by data.

Quote of the Show:

“If you want to be an entrepreneur, you better make sure that you’re comfortable with not having all the answers. You reach out for a quote, simply looking to understand if upgraded windows would increase your home’s energy efficiency, and after an hour-long, data-stuffed slide presentation, you still find yourself asking those same basic questions.

Unfortunately, this Window Salesman Plight isn’t industry specific -- it’s a common and innocent byproduct of passionate businesspeople. We see it in many business to business (B2B) technology companies, where articulating the value in the customer’s language is often more challenging and complex. It’s easy to fall into the trap of focusing on what your product or service does, not the value it delivers. After spending countless hours refining real-time dashboards and feature-rich toolsets, of course you want to share every detail of your “baby.” While the features and functions of your solution certainly have their place, it shouldn’t be the focal point of your company’s messaging platform.

We know all too well that this is easier said than done. It’s hard to hone in on concise, compelling messaging. If your current messaging isn’t resonating with your target market or you are building something from the ground up, always begin by fully understanding your audience’s needs and pain points in conjunction with the market dynamics and your true competitive differentiators.

Start From ‘The Other Side Of The Table’

Messaging is a make-or-break point in your marketing foundation. Often confused with “copy” or “content” (the specific words used in marketing material), in reality, messaging is the guidepost and framework for companies to articulate a cohesive, compelling and strategically crafted story to the outside world.

To set a solid foundation for successful relationships with customers and prospects, companies must focus on WIIFM: the “What’s in it for me?” value proposition that elicits an emotional response from the audience. Put yourself in their shoes: Customers and prospects have everyday problems that impede their work. No one wants to feel alone in their struggle, and being able to evoke the satisfying “they get my pain and can help fix it” may sound simple, yet it is a powerful place to start.

That’s why we emphasize with clients that messaging is more than just words. If your message reaches your target audience but isn’t compelling enough to precipitate the intended response, the issues will cascade downward from there, since everything related to a company’s go-to-market (both externally and internally) relies on having the right messaging in place.

Executing The Strategy Behind The Words

Unfortunately, having “perfect” messaging in place doesn’t preclude you from experiencing future dissonance. The right messaging isn’t a one-and-done effort. A variety of factors can drive a company’s need to revisit their messaging, including:

1. Launching new lines of business (products or services)
2. Recognizing changes in the competitive landscape
3. Identifying shifts in buyer behavior
4. Planning to penetrate new market segments and/or new personas
5. Repositioning to support a company’s evolving growth strategy
6. Acquiring or merging with another entity, or other business model change

These inflection points can be applied to analyze past, current and future messaging needs. Understanding the triggers that warrant a messaging audit allows companies to proactively maintain and refresh their messaging to support a stellar marketing function -- before feeling the pain of stagnant messaging.

After identifying a need to develop or change messaging, companies should embark on an exhaustive yet worthwhile process of analyzing and synthesizing questions around six areas before concluding the appropriate messaging direction.

1. Market Landscape: Where and how does my company fit into the broader market?
2. Competitive Landscape: How are my competitors articulating their value?
3. Path To Market: How should our partnerships and alliances inform our positioning?
4. External Stakeholders: What are customers, prospects, analysts and other influencers saying?
5. Present And Future State Of Our Products And Services: What do we offer today and where are we headed?
6. Internal Environment: What are we communicating on our website vs. the annual report? Is everyone rallying around the same, correct message?

Is your team too close to the product to see the bigger picture?

Answering these six questions honestly is hard to do from inside the bottle. If you are struggling to define your true value proposition, you don’t have to build your messaging framework alone. Let Magnetude Consulting help you find the words that actually convert.

Get Expert Eyes on Your Messaging

Building Out A Messaging Framework

Once you confirm your strategic direction, it is time to build out a messaging framework document. Think of it as a clean canvas where you can articulate all of your strategic concepts. Using a framework provides consistency and clarity on the “right” message to deploy across all communications, both internally and externally.

So, where do you start? Most messaging frameworks include:

• A few paragraphs about the company, incorporating information that’s both visionary and outlines “what we do and who we help” in a tone and voice that captures the essence of how the company wants to be perceived by the customer.
• Taglines to quickly convey value.
• Unique value propositions, which are typically the three to four points that set the company and product or service apart in the market.
• Target audiences and their pain points as they relate to the solution.
• Industry proof points or internal data points that support key messages.

The Many Applications Of Messaging

Leadership teams will notice a powerful difference once they are brought through a messaging initiative and have a strong framework in place to serve as the foundation for internal and external communications.

With a coherent message that articulates the real value, heart and soul of your company, and its product or service offerings, marketing and sales teams can begin applying it to just about any form of communication, and to any audience -- sales messaging and materials, marketing campaigns, web content, annual reports, analyst presentations, articles and more. Done right, messaging should come to life in content development, marketing and sales programming.

Armed with the right understanding of your place in the market, messaging that supports your differentiation and resonates with target audiences, and a plan for disseminating it through the right materials and programs, companies of any size can reap the benefits of a solid foundation that can support your desired growth trajectory.

Originally posted on Forbes

Great messaging is only as powerful as the execution behind it.

If your B2B company is ready to stop confusing prospects and start converting them, it’s time to build a framework that actually works. In this episode of Shift & Thrive, host Natalie Nathanson talks with Bree Katulak, President and CFO of RenoSys and host of the Unstoppable You podcast, about leading transformation in manufacturing and industrial businesses. A CPA by training, Bree shares how quarterly town halls, fireside chats, and a constant presence on the plant floor lifted employee engagement by 800 basis points and cut turnover from 65% to 15% at Polygon. She also covers reorganizing engineering into sales after pressure-testing the plan with her YPO forum, leading with curiosity instead of alarm when KPIs dip, walking away from unprofitable customers, and setting priorities across people, go-to-market strategy, and technology in her current role.

Takeaways:

Earn employee trust by staying visible and following up on every open question within a set timeframe.

When someone pushes back on change, take it offline and ask what is driving it before deciding if they are a fit.

Test major org changes with a peer group of CEOs and ask them to challenge every angle before you announce.

When a KPI dips, ask questions from curiosity before stepping in, because early intervention can create stress across your team.

Tie incentive plans to the metrics that drive valuation so employees share in the results they help create.

Define which customers are not a fit, since every yes uses capacity you need for better ones.
Decide which strategic priorities you are pausing and make that list visible so your team stays focused on what matters now.

Quote of the Show:

“I may have good ideas, but working together as a group can make them way better, and it’ll help get the buy-in, and we’ll actually move faster.” In this episode of Shift & Thrive, host Natalie Nathanson talks with George Sens, President and CEO of Lurex Bio, about the current reality framework he used to transform go-to-market motions across multiple companies. George shares how shifting sales teams from pitching products to uncovering problems drove significant revenue growth, why he leads on three core principles of transparency, mutual accountability and mutual trust, and how a career setback taught him to ask blunt questions before joining a new organization.

Takeaways:

Slow down before you act. Observing current reality first builds the insight real transformation requires.

Deepen discovery before pitching. Shallow discovery sells products, deep discovery sells outcomes.

Treat transparency as a habit, not a crisis tool. Share financial context consistently, not just when news is bad.

Lead people, manage processes. Tailor leadership to the individual while keeping processes standardized.

Extend accountability to every function equally. Sales, product and legal all deserve the same standard.

Ask blunt questions before entering a new partnership or role. Address red flags early rather than hoping they resolve.

Fail fast when a role or partnership isn’t working. Waiting only widens the gap you’ll eventually have to close.

Quote of the Show:

“For me, it really is transparency, mutual accountability, and mutual trust as a leadership style. In this episode of Shift & Thrive, host Natalie Nathanson talks with Yossi Appleboum, co-founder and CEO of Sepio, about building a cybersecurity company around a category that barely existed when he started it. Yossi shares why he refuses to sell fear, how he can tell when a prospect’s thinking has actually shifted, what it costs in time and money to educate a market from the ground up, and how the investor conversation changes entirely once a company moves from early traction into scale. He also opens up about leadership lessons from three decades of company-building, giving his co-founders and team room to grow, and how his family history shapes the way he thinks about bringing value to the world.

Takeaways:

Educate before you pitch. In less mature markets, walk buyers through the risk itself rather than assuming they already see the problem.

Skip the fear-based pitch. Build trust through dialogue and honest questions instead of worst-case scenarios and pressure.

Watch for buyers echoing your language back to you. It’s an early signal the idea has landed, well before any deal closes.

Match your investor search to your sales cycle. Companies selling to large enterprises need investors willing to accept a longer path to revenue.

Give co-founders and senior hires room to lead. Avoid showing up as a unified front to every meeting so others can grow into the space.

Simplify your message as you move down-market. What works with sophisticated early buyers won’t land with less experienced ones.

Keep helping the next generation of founders. Small, consistent mentorship compounds across an industry over time.

Quote of the Show:

“You don’t sell fear, and you should not sell fear, because then you’re losing credibility.”

Links:

LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/yossi-appleboum-2019/

Website: https://sepiocyber.com

Ways to Tune In:

Spotify:

Apple Podcasts:

Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/fa60b654-1955-4055-93df-fdd40c2a5c8f/shift-thrive-ceo-insights-on-driving-change

iHeart Radio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-shift-thrive-ceo-insights-166792501

Pandora: https://www.pandora.com/podcast/shift-and-thrive-ceo-insights-on-driving-change/PC:1001086797

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClf9QxGUxZw_Sv8_4bZP34Q

This show is sponsored by Magnetude Consulting, bringing you the thinking-Power of a Growth Consultancy and the Getting-It-Done Power of a full-service B2B Marketing Agency.

Learn more at: Magnetude Consulting

Why Alignment Beats Strategy When Growth Stalls - Mark Schwartz - Shift & Thrive - Episode # 113

Listen now | September 14, 2026 / 52:18 / E113

Shift & Thrive Podcast

What does it take to reignite growth once it starts to flatten, and why do so many leaders assume their team already understands the plan? In this episode of Shift & Thrive, host Natalie Nathanson talks with Mark Schwartz, who co-founded and helped scale Fabrinet to over a billion dollars in revenue before taking on the CEO role at STAT. Mark walks through the wake-up call that came when an outside consultant revealed his leadership team had never clearly communicated the company’s mission, and how fixing that alignment gap helped growth reemerge within three quarters. The conversation moves into leading through mergers and acquisitions, the role of humility when integrating an acquired team, and how Mark uncovered and corrected misaligned sales incentives at STAT. He also reflects on stepping into go-to-market leadership without a traditional sales background and why CEO visibility in sales meetings matters more than most leaders realize.

Takeaways:

Repeat your mission and strategic priorities constantly. What is clear in your head is not automatically clear to your team.

Vary how you deliver key messages. People absorb information differently, so one format will never reach everyone.

Give your extended leadership team visibility into senior decisions. It builds the confidence they need to cascade messages down.

Lead M&A integration with humility. Ask what the acquired team does better before asking them to adopt your way.

Bring acquired leaders into your executive team early. It reduces uncertainty and helps stabilize their people.

Audit incentive plans regularly. A plan built for one behavior can quietly reward another.

Stay visible in sales meetings even without a sales background. Your presence signals what matters to the whole team.

Quote of the Show:

“If the CEO doesn’t know the strategic priorities, there’s no If you’re going through M&A activity, launching new offerings, expanding into new markets or moving upmarket, you should proactively evaluate whether your company’s narrative—who your brand is and how you fit into your buyer’s needs—needs to adjust to fit your new circumstances.

Outside of these major transitions, it’s harder to know when your brand story needs updating. Missed targets are an obvious sign that something in the business is no longer working. But lagging indicators like conversion rates and revenue reflect conversations, messaging and market conditions from months ago. By the time your bottom line is affected, you may wish you had acted sooner. Fortunately, you can.

8 Signs Your Brand Story Is No Longer Hitting

Don’t wait for narrative problems to become financial problems. Look for these early signs that it’s time to update, refresh or rewrite your brand’s story.

1. Prospects don’t have an aha moment.

In sales conversations, prospects nod politely and say your pitch is “interesting.” But there’s no real aha moment. You don’t hear, “That’s exactly what we need.” When a story is working, it creates clarity and momentum for buyers. When it isn’t, sales conversations go nowhere fast.

2. You sound like everyone else.

The competitive landscape suddenly feels … familiar. The differentiators you’ve leaned on for years now appear everywhere—or are no longer relevant to the market. If what makes you different has become table stakes, then your competitive advantage is diminished. It’s time to shift the conversation and start talking about what matters to your customers today.

3. Team members can’t tell the story effectively.

As startups and founder-led companies grow, they often face a common problem: The founder can deliver their brand story with passion and conviction, but when others in the company try to tell it, it falls flat. That’s an indication you have a personal story, not a business narrative.

4. Your sales team abandons the script.

Salespeople need the flexibility to adjust messages to the prospects in front of them—within reason. But if a team is consistently deviating from a brand’s core narrative, it’s worth getting curious about why. Sales teams are laser-focused on closing deals. When they veer away from official messaging, that indicates the current story doesn’t sell.

5. Your marketing makes you cringe.

You look at your website, sales deck, or LinkedIn page … and hate what you see. The language is outdated and may not reflect the work you’re doing today. That “cringe factor” is more than an emotional reaction: It’s a sign worth paying attention to.

6. The story keeps getting longer.

Over time, your story has grown, with new services and capabilities layered into the narrative. Somewhere along the way, you lost sight of the unifying message. Describing a jumble of products, services and capabilities leaves buyers confused and uncertain about who you are.

7. The story is too narrow.

If you’ve expanded into new markets and audience segments, there’s a good chance your story hasn’t kept pace. It likely speaks clearly to some audience segments but only partially to others. You find yourself stretching or qualifying the language because it’s too narrow for the company you’ve become.

8. Your mission and vision feel distant.

You haven’t updated—or even reflected deeply on—your mission and vision in years. And what once felt crystal-clear now seems vague or misaligned with the company’s direction. When the overall direction of the business no longer resonates, the story built on top of it won’t either.

What To Do When It’s Time To Rewrite Your Story

Once you’re honest about the problem, you can start taking action. Here’s what to do next:

1. Gather input from sales and customers.

Remember the sales team that couldn’t stick to the script? They were telling you something important, so start by listening. Ask your team where they feel friction. Review recordings of customer conversations: Where does your story land, and where does it miss the mark? (AI can be your friend here! Upload sales call transcripts into an LLM and ask it to identify patterns for you.)

2. Revisit your mission and vision.

Examine your company’s mission, vision and strategic direction with your leadership team. Has your ICP shifted? Has your value proposition evolved? Are you trying to achieve something different entirely? If the foundation has changed, the narrative must move with it.

3. Assume the story needs to change.

Avoid the instinct to prove that your current narrative is still good enough. When companies experience meaningful growth and evolution, the story almost always changes. Look at it as a positive sign that you aren’t remaining stagnant.

4. Be willing to let the old story go.

Founders and long-tenured leaders are often attached to their original narrative. It reflects the hard work they put into making the company what it is today. Acknowledge any resistance you might feel to letting go of an older story, and push through it to keep moving forward.

5. Bring the right people to the table.

While narrative work is the responsibility of your marketing leadership, it requires input and alignment from other leaders across the organization. Secure buy-in from leaders across the organization: executive leadership, revenue, delivery, customer success and sales.

6. Consider external support.

If you lack senior leadership in any key area (marketing, product strategy, sales), consider engaging an external consultant to fill the gap. The strategic input you need may come from a partner who can bring industry expertise and an outside perspective that challenges internal assumptions.

Looking for that outside perspective?

See how Magnetude Consulting helps B2B tech firms realign their brand narrative and go-to-market strategy.

You: The Author Of Your Story

Outgrowing your brand story isn’t a failure; it’s a sign that your business has evolved. Updating your narrative can create alignment and clarity across the organization. It gives teams a shared language to describe what you offer and why it matters, while ensuring customers continue to understand your unique value. These are the kinds of internal and external benefits that enable businesses to thrive. And the story will keep growing right along with you.

Originally posted on Forbes

Thought Leadership 2.0: Why Authenticity Wins in B2B - Shift & Thrive - Episode # 112

Watch now | September 2, 2026 / 36:07 / E112

Shift & Thrive Podcast

What does it actually take to build trust when AI has made it easier than ever to produce mediocre content? In this special compilation episode of Shift & Thrive, host Natalie Nathanson pulls together candid insights from a range of go-to-market leaders and CEOs on what is really driving attention and credibility in B2B today. The conversation moves through personal branding, employee advocacy, the brand versus demand debate, and the growing premium on authenticity as AI content floods every channel. Together, these voices make the case that the future of go-to-market is not less human, it is more human, powered by technology but proven by real people.

Takeaways:

Put your executive team’s real voices forward, not just brand messaging. Personal branding across leadership builds trust faster than a single company voice.

Revisit old-school tactics like handwritten notes and one-to-one outreach. They stand out precisely because everyone else has gone digital and generic.

Train every employee, not just sales, to pitch your product with confidence. Their authentic voice on social media is free, credible publicity.

Invest in brand even when ROI is not immediate. It quietly shortens the uphill climb your sales team faces on every first call.

Commit to founder-led content for at least a year before judging results. Consistency beats chasing a single viral moment.

Watch for AI-generated “slop.” Audiences are increasingly rewarding authenticity over polish.

Bring your whole team to customer-facing events, not just sales. Understanding the buyer firsthand changes how everyone builds and sells.

Quote of the Show:

“There’s never been more noise in all of our ears or all of our screens. And so authenticity has become a real currency.” — David Axler

Guest Links:

Kristina’s LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kristinamcmillan/

Stephen’s LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephen-ochs-mba-1681ba19/

David’s LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidaxler/

Yossi’s LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/yossicarmon/

Michele’s LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michelejohnstonlash/

Christian’s LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christianhyatt/

Sneer’s LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sneer-rozenfeld-aa993a77/

Natalie’s LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/natalienathanson/

Ways to Tune In:

Spotify:

<iframe class="spotify-wrap podcast" data-attrs="{"image":"https://i.scdn.co/image/ab6765630000ba8a5a7b3750330c43a38e612960","title":"Shift & What happens when companies fail to adapt? In this Go-to-Market Spotlight episode of Shift & Thrive, host Natalie Nathanson talks with Kerry Cunningham, Head of Research and Thought Leadership at 6Sense, about the realities of modern B2B buying. With decades of experience, Kerry breaks down how outdated outbound tactics give way to smarter, signal-driven approaches, why “intent data” is often misunderstood as mere interest signals, and how AI is prompting buyers to engage sellers earlier without extending overall cycles. They explore alignment pitfalls, the dangers of “folklore debt” in scaling, and practical ways for CEOs to drive buyer-focused transformations that boost efficiency and trust between teams.

Key Takeaways:

Shift from cold outbound to signal-based targeting for better results. Identify in-market accounts through interest signals first, then use marketing to drive engagement before involving sales, transforming team productivity and relationships.

Treat intent data as interest signals, not guaranteed buying intent. Avoid chasing short-lived spikes by contextualizing signals with sustained activity and engagement history to prevent sales frustration and false positives.

Align sales, marketing, and customer success around buyer journeys, not just internal processes. Prioritizing how buyers actually research and decide creates more effective go-to-market motions than inward-focused calibrations.

Adapt to AI’s impact on buying cycles by engaging earlier. With buyers evaluating unfamiliar AI components, prepare for longer sales interactions while recognizing that overall decision timelines and preferences often remain unchanged.

Evolve storytelling as your company scales to avoid folklore debt. Celebrate past successes but actively replace outdated narratives about “how we win” with new ones that support growth, freeing teams from limiting tactics.

Quote of the Show:

“We acquire debt from the stories that we tell ourselves about how we become successful. The stories about how we won in the past often are not the stories that will help us win in the future.”

Links:

LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kerrycunningham/

Website: http://www.6sense.com/

Ways to Tune In:

Spotify:

Apple Podcasts:

Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/fa60b654-1955-4055-93df-fdd40c2a5c8f/shift-thrive-ceo-insights-on-driving-change

iHeart Radio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-shift-thrive-ceo-insights-166792501

Pandora: https://www.pandora.com/podcast/shift-and-thrive-ceo-insights-on-driving-change/PC:1001086797

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClf9QxGUxZw_Sv8_4bZP34Q

This show is sponsored by Magnetude Consulting, bringing you the thinking-Power of a Growth Consultancy and the Getting-It-Done Power of a full-service B2B Marketing Agency.

Learn more at: Magnetude Consulting

Scaling your B2B marketing without the overhead: Magnetude Consulting helps fractional and growing revenue teams turn signal-driven insights into pipeline.

→ Explore Magnetude’s growth services

Why B2B Buyer Behavior Demands a New Marketing Strategy - Michele Johnston - Shift & Thrive - # 110

Listen now | August 19, 2026 / 36:49 / E110

Shift & Thrive Podcast

If you can no longer draw a clean line from marketing activity to revenue, does that mean marketing isn’t working, or does it mean you’re measuring it wrong? In this episode of Shift & Thrive, host Natalie Nathanson sits down with Michele Johnston, Director of Digital Delivery and AI Lead at Magnetude Consulting, for a special internal conversation on how AI and shifting search behavior are upending buyer journeys. Michele explains why chasing the technology behind search and AI distracts marketers from the person on the other end of it, why attribution is becoming less reliable as buying gets less linear, and why brand and demand should be treated as a spectrum rather than a rivalry. The conversation closes with an unexpected parallel: what nearly two decades of endurance racing has taught Michele about consistency, patience, and trusting a process you can’t always measure in real time.

Takeaways:

Focus on the person behind the search or prompt, not the technology driving it. Chasing platform mechanics distracts from solving the buyer’s actual problem.

Spend most of your effort on content that resonates, not technical optimization. Roughly 80 percent of SEO and AEO success comes from relevance, not schema and site fixes.

Be skeptical of anyone who claims certainty about how search and AI behavior will evolve. Test, adapt, and get comfortable saying “we don’t know yet.”

Evaluate marketing holistically instead of chasing perfect attribution. Look at top-line lead generation and quality rather than digging into channel-by-channel credit.

Treat brand and demand as a spectrum, not competing budgets. Brand builds the trust that gets you on the shortlist before buyers ever contact sales.

Use marketing to proactively answer the objections your sales team hears most. Removing those barriers publicly shortens the path to a real conversation.

Apply an endurance athlete’s mindset to marketing investment. Most of the work looks unremarkable day to day, but consistency compounds into results over time.

Quote of the Show:

“It is the consistency of doing that day after day, week after week, month after month, that gets you to completing an Ironman or a 10K swim. I really feel marketing’s very similar to that, where we’re doing a lot of different things, and not everything is immediately measurable, but if you don’t do those things, it’s gonna hinder your goals and your outcomes.” - Michele Johnston

Links:

LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/michelejohnstonlash

Website: https://www.magnetudeconsulting.com/

Ways to Tune In:

Spotify:

Apple Podcasts:

Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/fa60b654-1955-4055-93df-fdd40c2a5c8f/shift-thrive-ceo-insights-on-driving-change

iHeart Radio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-shift-thrive-ceo-insights-166792501

Pandora: https://www.pandora.com/podcast/shift-and-thrive-ceo-insights-on-driving-change/PC:1001086797

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClf9QxGUxZw_Sv8_4bZP34Q

This show is sponsored by Magnetude Consulting, bringing you the thinking-Power of a Growth Consultancy and the Getting-It-Done Power of a full-service B2B Marketing Agency.

Learn more at: Magnetude Consulting

The Hidden Cost of Change: What Leaders Miss - Kelley Hippler - Shift & Thrive - Episode # 109

Listen now | August 12, 2026 / 48:24 / E109

Shift & Thrive Podcast

What does a reduction in force actually cost you once the client relationships start to unravel? In this episode of Shift & Thrive, host Natalie Nathanson sits down with Kelley Hippler, Chief Revenue Officer at Thought Industries and former Global Chief Sales Officer at Forrester, where she led a team of over 800 and grew revenue by 51 percent. Kelley draws on decades of go-to-market transformation experience, from modernizing sales motions inside a traditional legal services firm to building AI-powered enablement into her sales org today. She and Natalie dig into how CEOs chronically underestimate the downstream cost of layoffs on customer trust, why leaning on early adopters beats trying to win everyone over at once, and how AI is reshaping seller productivity in ways that finally feel like a genuine unlock rather than another management tool.

Takeaways:

Don’t try to win everyone over at once during change. Focus on early adopters, build momentum with their wins, then let peer pull bring the rest along.

Factor relationship disruption into the true cost of layoffs. Account churn spikes when clients get handed off, and few leaders calculate that risk upfront.

Give reassigned teams room to absorb new accounts properly. Strip administrative work off their plates so they have bandwidth to rebuild trust with clients.

Treat employee experience as your best lever for customer experience. How you treat your team is how they will ultimately treat your customers.

Lead from the front on AI adoption. Leaders who use the tools themselves set the pace and credibility for the rest of the organization.

Expect smaller, thinner pipelines and more stakeholders per deal. Multi-thread every opportunity early to avoid late-stage surprises.

Revisit your growth story as you scale. Past success narratives can quietly become “folklore debt” that no longer serves where you’re headed.

Quote of the Show:

“The way you treat your employees is, in the end, how they will treat your customers. In this Go-to-Market Deep Dive episode of Shift & Thrive, host Natalie Nathanson sits down with Amit Pande, an experienced AI GTM and Product advisor, who has held roles at Google, Oracle, Yahoo, HP, and multiple AI startups. Amit walks through the three forces that carried his last company through reinvention: subtracting before adding, out-innovating on product, and integrating teams around the customer. The conversation turns to leadership identity in moments of change, what it means to hire (or wait to hire) during a transformation, and why Amit believes CEOs should soon be asking for AI and token budgets the same way they ask for headcount.

Takeaways:

Before adding new strategy, subtract what no longer serves the business, from tools and reports to unused market segments.

Protect the people closest to daily work. Reserve bold cuts for process and product, not the teams already weathering change.

Rebuild trust in new tools by shifting how people communicate, not just what platform they use.

Treat existing customers as your innovation lab. Their feedback should shape the roadmap more than internal guesswork.

Delay hiring until the vision is proven. Bring in people who multiply your skill set, not duplicate it.

Ask for AI and token resources the way you’d ask for headcount. A small, well-equipped team can outperform a much larger one.

When a conversation stalls, let the silence sit. your database and run events. But today, that idea feels like a fairy tale.

Digital marketing has democratized access; companies of all sizes can now launch websites, run campaigns and build social media audiences. These lower barriers to entry, however, have increased competition in an already noisy landscape—and the increasing use of AI in marketing is exacerbating the situation.

To stand out, you need marketing specialists with deep expertise in specific channels and tactics (e.g., SEO, PPC, content, social media). And you must understand how these pieces work together to hit KPIs and drive results.

The Generalist Marketer: Advantages And Limitations

Companies, particularly with limited budgets, often decide to hire a more junior or mid-level generalist who understands a little about a lot. The most talented of these professionals are often flexible and able to take on multiple roles, which can seem cost effective. If they can leverage AI on top of that, it’s easy to see generalists as a one-person solution.

But while these professionals can execute a range of tactics, they often lack the depth to truly optimize each one. They may start an SEO effort or launch Google Ads, but keeping up with constant changes would require specialization. Without it, mediocrity appears across the board and feeds the misconception that “marketing doesn’t work.”

How To Bring On The Marketing Expertise Needed

To succeed, organizations need the right marketing strategy, an intentional mix of tactics and best-in-class execution. But acquiring the talent to accomplish this is a financial commitment—whether it’s built in-house or outsourced. It’s a delicate balance to get what you need without breaking the bank.

An In-House Marketing Team Ensures Alignment

For some companies, assembling a full-time, internal team may be the ideal scenario. Because leadership, execution and key specialist roles work in sync, expertise is spread across the team and strategies can better align with business goals. With an in-house team that’s singularly focused on your business, communication can be more streamlined, and employees will have better access to SMEs. This can also be the best option if you have more than enough work to keep every team member operating at full capacity.

However, building an in-house team isn’t always feasible. Between hiring a CMO, coordinator, demand gen lead, content writer and other key positions, payroll alone can exceed a million dollars annually. If you don’t need a full-time employee in certain roles, like CMO or social media specialist, it’d be an irresponsible investment to hire them on anyway. Having underutilized talent can be a hidden cost, especially if individuals don’t have a broad-enough skill set to take on tasks outside their role.

Outsourced Marketing Provides Expertise Without The Overhead

Outsourcing marketing needs—whether to a fractional leader, specialized agency, freelancer or integrated team—gives companies access to high-level strategy, specialized skills and tactical execution without the financial burden of full-time salaries. Because this approach offers flexibility to scale up or down based on current needs, helping to ensure each area gets expert attention at the right time. Outsourcing can also be a more responsible expenditure because every dollar spent can yield meaningful outcomes.

When you outsource marketing efforts, you gain exposure to a wider array of strategies. Because external specialists work across different companies and even industries, they see real-time trends within a larger dataset. This often means they’re more current on best practices and better equipped to offer refined strategies built from a broader knowledge base. By contrast, an in-house marketer has a sample size of one: your company. Their view is inherently narrower.

However, if outsourced talent isn’t properly integrated, they can become siloed and reactive. Depending on the kind of third party you engage with, there may be time delays on turnaround to deal with. You also can’t guarantee that you’d be a priority, the way you would be with an in-house team.

The Hybrid Approach: Combining Internal And External Strengths

Many companies find that the best marketing team is a hybrid one. For example, they may have an in-house coordinator managing day-to-day operations and serving as a point of contact, while outsourced specialists deliver deep expertise. It’s important to evaluate staffing in relation to level of activity and skill set of your existing team. Do you have someone who’s great at email, social, basic writing and event logistics, but can’t write longer-form content or provide in-depth analytics and reporting? With outsourcing, you can find a specialized expert to fill in those skills gaps while avoiding the cost burden of another full-time employee.

When weighing your options for a talent model, consider the following:

• Company Goals: What are the overall quantitative (e.g., revenue) and qualitative (e.g., brand awareness) business objectives?

• Current Strategies: Where are you focusing your efforts—on digital, events, content, channels? You can build out your resources accordingly.

• Gaps And Limitations: Where are you struggling due to a lack of skills or strategic direction?

• Existing Resources: Who’s already on the team? Build around what you have.

• Budget: What can you spend? Consider campaign and tech expenses on top of talent costs. You could potentially get a senior, skilled outsourced team for the cost of one or two full-time employees.

Not sure whether an in-house, outsourced, or hybrid team is right for you?

Schedule a Marketing Strategy Call with Magnetude Consulting

If you aren’t already working with a strategic marketing leader during this process, consider bringing one on board (even as a fractional resource).

Whether you choose to have an in-house, outsourced or hybrid team, one thing is clear. If you want to compete and grow as a business, generalists won’t cut it. You need expert-level marketers to succeed.

Originally posted on Forbes

Letting Go to Scale Up - Joseph Monastiero - Shift & Thrive - Episode # 107

Listen now | July 29, 2026 / 44:42 / E107

Shift & Thrive Podcast

What changes in a leader the moment they stop being the one with all the answers? In this episode of Shift & Thrive, host Natalie Nathanson talks with Joseph Monastiero, CEO of HiQo, just shy of his 90-day mark in the role after rising through sales leadership to chief revenue officer. Joseph opens up about the discomfort of learning to delegate, why he now waits until the end of meetings to speak, and how radical candor and shared vulnerability have shaped his leadership style since his early days working alongside his father. The conversation also digs into how AI is reshaping go-to-market strategy and buyer behavior, why he sees AI as a force multiplier rather than a shortcut, and his advice for CEOs who want an honest read on what’s really happening inside their sales organization.

Takeaways:

Delegation gets harder as authority grows. Trust your team to execute rather than instinctively jumping in first.

Speak last in meetings. Listening before opining prevents rash decisions and surfaces better options.

Share your weaknesses openly with your team. It builds trust and models the vulnerability you want back from them.

Match go-to-market leadership style to company stage. Some moments call for adaptability, others for steady consistency.

Arm your go-to-market leaders with domain expertise, then let them own execution and pipeline decisions.

Get on the ground with your sales team regularly. In this episode of Shift & Thrive, host Natalie Nathanson talks with Vivek Mahapatra, Chief Product Officer at LexisNexis Legal and a former member of the founding team behind Salesforce’s Agentforce, about building a go-to-market strategy around the customer rather than internal assumptions. Vivek breaks down how he maps the full customer ecosystem, separating the buyer from the user, to uncover the gaps that shape smarter go-to-market decisions. He also shares how radical transparency with his team built the psychological safety needed to sustain a high-performing culture during a major AI product transformation, and closes with the rocking chair decision framework that continues to guide his biggest career choices.

Takeaways:

~ Say “I don’t know” out loud. It gives your team permission to admit the same and start solving problems together.

~ Practice radical transparency with your team. Sharing what you know, even the hard parts, builds the trust that creates psychological safety.

~ Treat major shifts as invite-everyone moments, not top-down mandates. Cross-functional buy-in early prevents rework later.

~ Map your customer’s full day, not just your product’s role in it, to spot real opportunity gaps.

~ Remember the buyer and the user are often different people. Talk to both before shaping your roadmap.

~ Loop the teams that built an idea into the teams that will ship it. Handing off a go-to-market initiative cold slows adoption.

~ Use a “rocking chair decision” test for hard calls. Ask yourself what will really matter when you’re 85.

Quote of the Show:

~ “In the beginning, we are taught that the way to grow in our careers and climb the corporate ladder is to be the loudest voice in the room, to be the one that everyone goes to and the one everyone knows. There’s a certain point at which that shifts, and it’s not about being the loudest person in the room; it’s actually about creating a space for others to speak up and to create a space for others to ask questions and work together.” - Vivek Mahapatra

Links:

~ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vivekmahapatra/

Ways to Tune In:

Spotify:

Apple Podcasts:

Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/fa60b654-1955-4055-93df-fdd40c2a5c8f/shift-thrive-ceo-insights-on-driving-change

iHeart Radio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-shift-thrive-ceo-insights-166792501

Pandora: https://www.pandora.com/podcast/shift-and-thrive-ceo-insights-on-driving-change/PC:1001086797

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClf9QxGUxZw_Sv8_4bZP34Q

This show is sponsored by Magnetude Consulting, bringing you the thinking-Power of a Growth Consultancy and the Getting-It-Done Power of a full-service B2B Marketing Agency.

Learn more at: Magnetude Consulting

Leading AI Infrastructure Transformation - Jon Billow - Shift & Thrive - Episode # 105

Listen now | July 15, 2026 / 40:08 / E105

Shift & Thrive Podcast

How do CEOs lead a company through radical business transformation without losing employee trust? In this episode of Shift & Thrive, host Natalie Nathanson talks with Jon Billow, Chief Revenue Officer of BNS and CEO of BNS Networks, about change management and leadership transformation in fast-moving markets. Jon shares the story of pivoting an entire data center company into a consulting organization after a major customer breach and why he chose extreme transparency with employees during that transition. Drawing on his background in Army Special Forces and stints across nearly every C-suite role, Jon breaks down how leadership style needs to flex depending on the seat you are sitting in, why building a perfect go-to-market strategy can become a fool’s errand, and how he approaches strategy in the AI infrastructure space where the landscape is still shifting.

Takeaways:

~ Choose transparency over false confidence, even without all the answers, to preserve trust during transformation.

~ Create multiple communication channels, like all-hands meetings and one-on-ones, so people can process change in their own way.

~ Define success and failure criteria before launching an initiative, not after you are emotionally invested.

~ Apply an MVP mindset to go-to-market strategy: define the minimum needed, launch, then iterate on real feedback.

~ Match your leadership style to the seat you currently sit in, not just your personality.

~ Avoid over-planning around fast-moving assumptions, like AI infrastructure shifts, when building a long-term strategy.

~ Build adaptability into your leadership approach. Getting comfortable being uncomfortable matters more than having it all figured out.

Quote of the Show:

~ “Things are moving at an increasing velocity compared with where they were in years past. If you can get into that mindset where you’re not gonna know it all, you’re not gonna have it all figured out, what you wake up to tomorrow is gonna be different than today, and you can be okay with that, I think that adaptability is critically important for the world that we’re in.” - Jon Billow

Links:

~ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonbillow/

~ Website: https://boldnew.com

Ways to Tune In:

Spotify:

Apple Podcasts:

Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/fa60b654-1955-4055-93df-fdd40c2a5c8f/shift-thrive-ceo-insights-on-driving-change

iHeart Radio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-shift-thrive-ceo-insights-166792501

Pandora: https://www.pandora.com/podcast/shift-and-thrive-ceo-insights-on-driving-change/PC:1001086797

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClf9QxGUxZw_Sv8_4bZP34Q

This show is sponsored by Magnetude Consulting, bringing you the thinking-Power of a Growth Consultancy and the Getting-It-Done Power of a full-service B2B Marketing Agency.

Learn more at: Magnetude Consulting

Unlearning as a Leadership Superpower - Ann Reilly - Shift & Thrive - Episode #104

Listen now | July 8, 2026 / 48:42 / E104

Shift & Thrive Podcast

How do leaders stay ahead when the rules keep changing before they even finish adapting to the last shift?

In this episode of Shift & Thrive, host Natalie Nathanson talks with Ann Reilly, founder of AdaptSuccess, a growth and transformation leader who spent her career navigating disruption at companies including STAR TV, Intuit, and Yahoo. Ann shares the moment she realized the digital media world she knew was about to be reshaped by AI, why unlearning is just as important as learning, and the framework she now uses to help leaders and teams measure and build real adaptability.

Takeaways:

Unlearning is often more important than learning right now. The skills, certifications, and experience that got you to where you are today are not guaranteed to get you to the next level.

Curiosity is a skill that has to be scheduled and practiced on an ongoing basis, not something you revisit every six months.

Most AI initiatives put 93% of the budget toward tools and technology and only 7% toward people, which is a major reason organizations struggle to actually adapt.

Adaptability can be measured using the ACE Model, which stands for ability, character, and environment, and includes 15 different dimensions.

The first phase of any adaptability program is diagnosis, since people on the same team often have completely different perceptions of how supportive their environment really is.

Working out loud and sharing progress before it feels finished builds psychological safety and helps teams learn and move faster together.

Two pieces of advice that shaped Ann’s career: make bold moves instead of incremental ones, and ask for help rather than trying to prove you can do it alone.

Quote of the Show:

“As I moved around the world, understanding what environment I was in and how I needed to achieve my goals was very important, and it was as much about learning new skills as unlearning skills.
